Which hash algorithm should I use?
For most modern applications, use SHA-256. It’s the current standard for security, digital signatures, and certificate validation. MD5 and SHA-1 are considered broken for security purposes (collision attacks are practical), but they’re still useful for checksums, non-security identifiers, and legacy system compatibility.
Is MD5 still safe to use?
MD5 is not safe for cryptography, certificates, or password storage because attackers can generate collisions (two different inputs producing the same hash). However, MD5 is still fine for non-security uses like checksums, file deduplication, or as an identifier for cached data.
What does “hash” mean?
A hash function takes any input (text, file, or data) and produces a fixed-length string of characters that uniquely represents that input. The same input always produces the same hash. Even a tiny change in the input produces a completely different hash — this is called the avalanche effect.
Can I reverse a hash back to the original text?
No — hashing is a one-way function. You cannot “decrypt” a hash back to the original input. This is why hashing is used for passwords: servers store the hash, not the password. When you log in, your password is hashed and compared to the stored hash.
Are hashes case-sensitive?
Yes — hash values are case-sensitive when compared. While the hash generator outputs lowercase hex characters by default, uppercase works just as well. Whichever case you use, be consistent when comparing hashes.
