FAQ

Is a 50% discount on a $100 item better than a 25% discount on a $200 item?

With discounts, the percentage matters but so does the original price. 50% off $100 = $50 saving and $50 final price. 25% off $200 = $50 saving but $150 final price. Same savings, different final spend. Use the calculator to compare apples to apples.

How do I calculate the final price after multiple discounts?

For stacked discounts (e.g., 20% off + an extra 10% off), apply the first discount to get the first sale price, then apply the second discount to that reduced price. Do not simply add the percentages (20+10=30%) — that overestimates the discount.

What’s the difference between discount percentage and savings?

Discount percentage is the rate applied to the original price. Savings is the actual money amount you save. For example, 10% off a $500 item saves you $50, while 10% off a $50 item saves you only $5 — same percentage, very different savings.

Can I use this for tax calculations?

Not directly. This calculator handles discounts only. For the final out-the-door price, calculate the discount first, then add tax to the discounted price separately.

How do chain discounts work?

Chain discounts (like “20% + 10% + 5%”) are common in wholesale. Apply them sequentially: 20% off original → then 10% off the result → then 5% off that result. The total discount is NOT 35% — it’s less, since each discount applies to a smaller base.
